Memories of McNease awards are given to youth to honor the contributions of E.H. "Mac" McNease and his music store, Witmer-McNease Music Co.
For decades, Witmer-McNease Music Co. was a cornerstone of the South Bend, Indiana, music scene, providing instruments, lessons, and support for local musicians. Founded in 1949 and incorporated in 1975, the store became a trusted destination for aspiring and professional musicians alike. Located at 439 S. Michigan St., it played a vital role in fostering music education and community engagement. Though the business was administratively dissolved in 2008, its legacy continues to live on through the musicians it supported and the impact it had on the local arts scene.
Originally sponsored by the Midwest Musician’s Co-op, this award has been a cherished tradition in our community. Now, we are proud to continue its legacy at The Collective, ensuring that musicians receive the recognition and support they deserve for years to come.
In 2016, Jeff Edwards achieved an incredible milestone as the Witmer-McNease Scholarship winner! His passion and dedication earned him 30 free guitar lessons with a top instructor at the Midwest Musician’s Co-Op, giving him the opportunity to refine his skills and take his musical journey to the next level. This award is a testament to the power of music education and the collective’s commitment to nurturing rising talent in the Midwest!
